When The Diagnosis and Correction of Vocal Faults by James C. McKinney was one of vocal pedagogy textbooks grad school, I started changed how I understood and thought about vocal technique. (This was in 2007 before many of today’s more popular pedagogical texts came out.)
McKinney’s book was “just right” compared with two of the other textbooks I had at the time: the very laborious to read Singing - The Mechanism and the Technic by William Vennard and the overly abstract Vocal Wisdom by Giovanni Battista Lamperti.
McKinney didn’t feel like I had to stress or guess as I read along. It offered a clear explanatory and diagnostic framework—rooted in observable behavior—built to correct misalignment—it even came with a really cool CD of sample types of faulty phonation!
Most importantly, it showed me what wasn’t working, and why—so I could adjust structurally, not just emotionally.
That same clarity is what I now bring to income.
Because these days, I’m no longer just a “coach.” It’s more like I’m a behavioral architect of income intelligence. I’ll admit I still need to practice saying it.
It may sound like something you’d read out of Vennard’s book. But it’s the best distillation of what I’m really doing for people.
My job isn’t to just motivate and give pep talks. It’s to help high-functioning individuals and other entrepreneurs really understand why their income doesn’t match their capability—and then I help them confidently build the intellectual, emotional and physical infrastructure that finally does.
Just like a master teacher wouldn’t tell a student to “sing better” without diagnosing the breath, the onset, the resonance pattern—I don’t tell people to “sell more” or “charge what they’re worth” without mapping the actual mechanics of their earning behavior.
Because income, like voice, has a structure.
And when the structure is off, no amount of effort can hold what you’re truly capable of.
